How to Repair and Maintain a Chain Link Fence Like a Pro

Chain link fences are a popular choice for both residential and commercial properties due to their durability, ease of installation, and relatively low cost. Just like other types of fences, chain link fences are prone to wear and tear over time. Some of the common issues that need to be addressed in a timely manner include broken posts, rust, loose ties, bent posts, and sagging sections.

A broken fence needs to be repaired on time to prevent further damage, accidents, and security risks. Here at Mr. Handyman, we take pride in providing professional fence repair and replacement. If your fence is in disrepair and you’re looking for a trusted handyman in Sherman, TX, trust our technicians to get the job done right.

Start with an Inspection

Walk along the entire fence line and inspect each section carefully. Look for rust, sagging mesh, bent posts, loose ties, or any holes in the fence fabric. Pay close attention to the gate area, as it's the most used and most vulnerable part of the fence. Identify all the problems at once so that you can plan your repairs more effectively and ensure nothing is overlooked.

Repair or Replace Damaged Posts

The fence’s stability depends heavily on its posts. If you find any that are bent, leaning, or loose, assess whether they can be straightened or if they need to be replaced. Straightening may involve digging around the post and adjusting its position before re-securing it with concrete. Severely bent or rusted posts should be removed entirely and replaced with new, galvanized steel ones to maintain structural integrity.

Tighten or Replace Chain Link Fabric

Sagging or loose chain link fabric is a common issue. Use a come-along tool or fence puller to re-stretch the mesh and restore its tension. Once tight, secure it to the posts and rails with new tie wires. If the mesh has large holes or is torn beyond repair, cut out the damaged section and splice in a new piece using a tension bar and fence ties to blend it with the existing fence.

Fix the Top Rail

The top rail provides horizontal support and helps keep the fence aligned. If it’s bent or broken, use a hacksaw to remove the damaged section and insert a replacement using rail sleeves or connectors. Be sure the new piece matches the existing rail in diameter and material for a uniform look and consistent strength.

Address Rust and Corrosion

Rust is a common problem affecting chain link fences, especially in damp or coastal areas. For minor rust, scrub the affected area with a wire brush, then apply a rust-inhibiting primer and touch-up paint. Severely corroded sections should be replaced to prevent spreading. Regular maintenance by an experienced handymen can help prevent future rust issues.

Replace Loose or Missing Hardware

Check for missing tie wires, bolts, or brackets and replace them with galvanized hardware to resist future corrosion. Secure all loose components to restore strength and prevent further damage from wind or impact.

Maintain the Surrounding Area

Keep grass, vines, and tree limbs trimmed back from the fence. Vegetation can trap moisture, cause rust, and even warp the structure over time. A clear fence line is easier to maintain and repair when needed.

Testimonials

Our Customers Love our Services

We called Mr. Handyman because we had a problem with our 2nd floor gutters overflowing and flooding the front flower beds. John arrived the next day and took care of everything. He was friendly, knowledgeable and took good care of our property. It turned out the gutters were fairly clean but John took the time to check more thoroughly and found the downspouts were clogged. He cleared them out and managed to get everything working as it should while taking care not to crush my newly planted flowers. I'm very happy with this service.

John Svoboda arrived when he was expected. He was friendly and professional. We wanted to make sure the windows were well sealed. He inspected each window inside and out and recommended caulking for some of them. He gave us an accurate time estimate for completing the work. A great experience!  We will be calling Mr. Handyman for other tasks

My dog has an autoimmune disease that requires he eat sitting upright. I got him a special chair for this, but it came without pilot holes drilled and for the life of me I could not get it assembled. I called Mr Handyman and Pete came out and was absolutely awesome. Amazingly friendly and knowledgeable dude, and was able to get the chair fixed and sturdy as a rock in no time at all. I had a few electrical outlets around the house that stopped working and he was also able to quickly diagnose that and explain to me what was happening. Another tech came out earlier this year to repair some flashing on my roof after a bad storm and had an equally awesome experience then. I’m very thankful for Pete and the team at Mr Handyman!
