A properly installed and maintained floor can last for decades. However, even the most durable floors are not indestructible. There are many causes of flooring damage, including water leaks, heavy foot traffic, furniture scratches, dropped objects, and everyday wear and tear. Moisture is one of the most common culprits, especially in areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Over time, damaged flooring can lead to safety hazards, reduced property value, and an unattractive appearance. As a homeowner, it’s important to know the common flooring issues you’re likely to encounter so that you can take the right action.
Here at Mr. Handyman, we specialize in floor repair and other home improvement projects. We’ve repaired floors for decades in both residential and commercial properties. Our handymen in Collinsville, TX know the common flooring issues homeowners encounter from time to time. Let’s look at five of those flooring issues.
Water is one of the biggest enemies of most types of flooring. Hardwood and laminate, in particular, can swell, warp, or buckle when exposed to excess moisture. This might happen from a plumbing leak, high humidity, or even repeated spills that aren’t cleaned up quickly. You’ll often notice the boards lifting or forming a wave-like shape. To prevent this, use rugs in moisture-prone areas and ensure your home has proper ventilation. If water damage has already occurred, replacement of the affected section may be necessary.
Tile flooring is known for its durability, but it’s not completely immune to damage. Dropping a heavy object or applying excessive pressure can cause individual tiles to crack or chip. This not only affects the appearance but can also be a safety hazard. The good news is that a single damaged tile can be replaced without redoing the entire floor. Use rugs in high-risk areas and choose the right grade of tile for the location to avoid this problem.
If you have hardwood or laminate flooring, you may notice gaps developing between planks over time. This usually happens because of changes in temperature and humidity. Wood naturally expands and contracts with moisture levels, and if your home isn’t properly climate-controlled, gaps can form. While minor spacing is normal, larger gaps may need professional adjustment. A humidifier in the winter and a dehumidifier in the summer can help keep these changes in check.
Vinyl is popular for being low maintenance and cost-effective, but it can peel or bubble when not installed properly or when exposed to moisture. Bubbling happens when adhesive fails or moisture gets trapped underneath. Peeling edges may be caused by excessive wear or poor bonding during installation. To prevent these issues, choose high-quality vinyl and make sure installation is done correctly by a skilled handyman—especially in bathrooms or kitchens where moisture is common.
No matter how careful you are, scratches and surface wear are almost inevitable over time, especially with pets, children, and heavy furniture. Hardwood and laminate floors are most vulnerable to this, though vinyl and tile can also get scuffed. It’s advisable to use protective pads under furniture legs, lay down area rugs in high-traffic zones, and keep pet nails trimmed to preserve your floor’s finish.

We called Mr. Handyman because we had a problem with our 2nd floor gutters overflowing and flooding the front flower beds. John arrived the next day and took care of everything. He was friendly, knowledgeable and took good care of our property. It turned out the gutters were fairly clean but John took the time to check more thoroughly and found the downspouts were clogged. He cleared them out and managed to get everything working as it should while taking care not to crush my newly planted flowers. I'm very happy with this service.
John Svoboda arrived when he was expected. He was friendly and professional. We wanted to make sure the windows were well sealed. He inspected each window inside and out and recommended caulking for some of them. He gave us an accurate time estimate for completing the work. A great experience! We will be calling Mr. Handyman for other tasks
We had a big screen TV mounted above our fireplace by Angie's list, the guy did a crappy job. So we called Mr handyman of Sherman, Duayne showed up he did a wonderful job and it wasn't as expensive. I highly recommend ask for Duayne
My dog has an autoimmune disease that requires he eat sitting upright. I got him a special chair for this, but it came without pilot holes drilled and for the life of me I could not get it assembled. I called Mr Handyman and Pete came out and was absolutely awesome. Amazingly friendly and knowledgeable dude, and was able to get the chair fixed and sturdy as a rock in no time at all. I had a few electrical outlets around the house that stopped working and he was also able to quickly diagnose that and explain to me what was happening. Another tech came out earlier this year to repair some flashing on my roof after a bad storm and had an equally awesome experience then. I’m very thankful for Pete and the team at Mr Handyman!
